Fed: Final Australian death toll from Bali likely to be 87

CANBERRA, Dec 7 AAP - The final number of Australians killed in the Bali bombings looksset to stand at 87, with 86 confirmed dead and one person still missing.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said its advice from Indonesianauthorities was that about 180 people were killed in the October 12 blasts.

"There are 86 confirmed Australian deaths," DFAT said on its official website.

"We have very serious concerns about a further one Australian."

Of the 86 confirmed fatalities, 80 died in Bali, one in Singapore and the rest diedupon return to Australia.

DFAT said of the 80 killed in Bali, 37 were from NSW, 20 from Victoria, 13 from WesternAustralia, five from Queensland, three from South Australia and one each from Tasmaniaand the ACT.

"One person from NSW died in a Singapore hospital on 7 November," DFAT said.

Since October 19, 77 Australian bodies had been repatriated to Australia, one to Britainand one to France.

One body was cremated in Bali.

Australia's JENNIFER REILLY will finally get her Commonwealth Games 200m individualmedley silver medal at a second presentation ceremony tomorrow.

Canadian swimming officials have decided not to appeal the decision to overturn theresult after a judge made an error and disqualified REILLY, elevating Canada's ELIZABETHWARDEN to a bronze medal which was presented after last night's race.

Canadian spokeswoman URSULA THIBOUTOT says WARDEN will hand over her bronze medal,which will go to teammate MARIANNE LIMPERT who was relegated from second to third.

She says the gold, silver and bronze medals will all be presented again at the aquaticcentre during tomorrow's swimming program.

A security guard has fatally shot a man during a bungled holdup in inner Sydney.

Police say the man, believed to be in his early to mid 20s, died in Royal Prince AlfredHospital this morning.

He was shot during the attempted robbery of a security vehicle outside a function centreat Wentworth Park late last night.

A second man fled the scene.

Police say the security guards were confronted outside the building at about 11.20pmand one shot was fired.

The wounded man was taken by ambulance to hospital but died a few hours later.

Police are seeking a second man last seen leaving the area in a silver-coloured Holden Commodore.

Federal Labor frontbencher CARMEN LAWRENCE is backing a change for Labor's policy towards
boatpeople.

She says the party's supporters expect a more compassionate approach.

Her move follows a call yesterday by a Queensland group named Labor for Refugees which
wants an end to mandatory detention of asylum seekers.

The federal opposition indigenous affairs spokeswoman says it's clear the ALP's backing
of the government's so-called Pacific solution is not working.

Ms LAWRENCE told ABC radio there's concern at the effect of the policy on the public's
attitude toward people in need and called for a compassionate approach.

She says unless Labor shifts its policy many will continue to be gravely disappointed
in the party.

BRISBANE, Aug 7 AAP - American balloonist Steve Fossett expects to cross the Australian
east coast and head over the Pacific Ocean late this morning.

A spokesman for the Chicago-based millionaire adventurer today said Fossett should
cross the east coast of Australia at Port Macquarie on the NSW north coast about 11.45am
(AEST) today.

"His next landsight will be the west coast of South America in five or six days," he said.

Fossett is making his sixth attempt to become the first solo balloonist to circle the earth.

He took off from Northam, Western Australia, on Sunday with his round-the-world voyage
expected to take 15 or 16 days.

Fossett's mission spokesman said: "He's feeling fine and very confident."

He said the planned trajectory over Sydney shifted north because of wind changes.

"His balloon Solo Spirit has slowed down a little but is maintaining altitude," the
spokesman said.

Solo Spirit has travelled more than 3000 kilometres since its launch in Western Australia.

Heading east across the continent Fossett successfully maneuvered his way out of an
unfavourable southward drift that would have taken Solo Spirit off course towards Tasmania.

Looking for an easterly flow of air, meteorologist Bob Rice and mission control director
Joe Ritchie told Fossett to go higher.

The adventurer dropped an empty propane tank to gain altitude, and entered an air flow
that turned the balloon northward about 20 degrees.

This brought Solo Spirit back on track, the mission spokesman said.

Fossett will face similar challenges in the coming days because of shifting wind patterns
over the Pacific Ocean.

Qld; Three injured in overnight stabbings

BRISBANE, Dec 26 AAP - Three people were injured in stabbings in south-east Queensland overnight.

Police said a 36-year-old woman was stabbed in the stomach in a domestic dispute at
a car wash in Rothwell, just north of Brisbane, around midday yesterday.

She was taken to Redcliffe Hospital for treatment and operated on immediately but no-one
has yet been charged in relation to the incident.

At Daisy Hill, on Brisbane's southern outskirts, a man was stabbed at a house shortly
after 9pm but he was not seriously injured.

Early this morning, a man was stabbed in the arm and suffered severe lacerations after
being stabbed with a broken bottle by another man in the Cavill Avenue Mall in Surfers
Paradise on the Gold Coast.

The injured man was taken to Gold Coast Hospital and another man was charged with unlawful
wounding.

He was due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court some time in the New Year,
a police spokesman said.
