The Shutout Sisters don't see the bottle coming. Crack! It hits Lexi Shannon smack in the side of the head. She winces but doesn't say, "Ouch." She picks up the empty plastic water bottle and hurls it at Garret Smith, her teammate who threw it.
Garret flings it back, and Lexi's sister, Zoe, fires it across the locker room at another teammate. Lexi and Zoe, blown up like the Michelin Man in their padded get-ups, spring off the bench and pounce upon Robbie Flansburg.
The girls, goalies on the Saratoga Blue Knights ice-hockey team, obscure the smaller boy. Robbie disappears under the pile of flailing 9- and 10-year-old arms and legs that finds the sisters, as usual, on top, side by side.
"We're more boy than some of the boys," says Zoe, 10, the older of the two, after their mother, Tracy, restores order.
The sisters are one year apart; Lexi is 9 with a round face and full lips. Zoe is a little bigger at 5-foot-1, 93 …
