Vic: Colourful Easter procession through Melbourne streets

MELBOURNE, April 20 AAP - A colourful procession of Christian youth through city streets
kickstarted an Easter Sunday celebration in Melbourne this afternoon.

The young people, carrying balloons with the message "Jesus is Risen" led a march from
the city's state library to Federation Square, where about 300 gathered to hear music
and religious speakers.

Among those to address the crowd was Baptist minister Reverend Tim Costello who spoke
on the importance of the Christian Easter message against a backdrop of war and violence.

He asked what it meant to be a Christian and follow Jesus in today's world.

"Does it mean that Christians of all people believe war has outlived its usefulness,
that the only way to short-circuit vengeance and striking back is love?" Mr Costello asked
those assembled.

"The resurrection says there is another life, therefore in this life give generously,
live sacrificially, take risks, be like Jesus," he said.

The ceremony concluded with the release of pigeons during a performance of Amazing Grace.
