May 12--Having made its mark worldwide for its robust software industry, India is aiming to become a retailing hub, with support from its government.
"After leading the information technology bandwagon, India is poised to grow as a major retail hub. What is needed is to create an appropriate environment for growth of the retail trade in India," Commerce Minister Kamal Nath said recently.
"The phenomenal increase [in retail activity] has been due to the growing purchasing power of the people, which has led to a significant growth in the demand for a variety of goods, both consumables and durables."
